Travel // Langford Fivehead and Cheddar Gorge

Hows everyone doing today? Into week 2 of the UK ‘lockdown’ and wow what a weird time it is… I’m trying not to be so hard on myself if I don’t get that work out done or if we just spend some time chilling. Its hard to not feel like you should be doing things all the time and being productive. Really hopeful this doesn’t go on for the worse case scenarios they’re saying (6 months!) and Tim and I have agreed that as soon as this is over we’re getting away for a long weekend somewhere and 100% going somewhere hot as soon as we can. Also praying that we have a good summer here in the UK this year to make it less painful. We found out yesterday that Wimbledon has been cancelled which is so sad but we get to have the same tickets in 2021 so still something to look forward to even if it’s just a little longer to wait. Gotta think of those positives though – this is all to keep us safe…

This post is long overdue! It’s been over 6 weeks since Tim surprised me to a weekend away in Somerset. I literally had no clue so it was an amazing surprise. Valentine’s day we woke up and Tim gave me a card which had a note in it saying pack an overnight bag! Apparently he’d booked it months before and got a good deal for 2 nights away. So after work that Friday we grabbed dinner at The Indian Brewery at Snowhill and then jumped on the road. We’d been meaning to try The Indian Brewery for ages and it was a tasty meal. We shared a thali and some chaat bombs – yum! Mowgli in Brum is still our favourite by far but it’s always good to try new places.

It took us a few hours to get down to Fivehead Langford – oh and I didn’t know where we were going until about half way through the journey! It was such a great surprise! Langford Fivehead was perfect… it only has 6 rooms so feels really exclusive and peaceful. You walk into an entrance hall off which there are several rooms leading to either the restaurant rooms or the living room which a huge roaring fire – so cosy!

What an entrance hall… those pendant lights!

There aren’t any tv’s in the rooms but that didn’t matter too much – quite nice to unplug – although we did get the laptop fired up so we could catch the 6 nations! The super king size bed was super cosy and there was a cute separate reading nock. We stayed in the Richardson room which had the most gorgeous views over the garden and kitchen gardens. Also have to say I loved the molton brown bathroom set – the ylang ylang smelt gorgeous and was so relaxing. They also had some bath salts which I took back home to use – definitely makes it feel like you’re in a spa when you use them!

The breakfast was delish. Because there’s only a max of 6 couples breakfast was a chilled affair. We had a pot of tea with hot croissants followed by granola and then whatever hot food we wanted. The first day I had poached eggs on toast while on the Sunday I had pancakes. YUM!

After a slow start to the day (8am wake up is a lie in for us!), we made our way to Cheddar Gorge. The weather was awful… it was the weekend Storm Dennis hit and lots of the country roads were flooded which made for an interesting drive. I was so glad to have recently got myself a new ski jacket which kept me nice and toasty! Definitely one of my best purchases this year so far (see here). I’d never been to Cheddar Gorge before so that was a nice surprise. Even though it was raining we still had a great time out. If you haven’t been before I’d definitely suggest it for a day out. There are 2 different caves (Gough’s cave and Cox’s cave) you can go into and get to see different rock formations as well as stalactites and stalagmites. Gough’s cave was definitely more impressive and the larger of the two so you can spend longer walking around. Because the weather was so bad we didn’t brave Jacob’s Ladder or the Cliff-top walk so are going to go back in the summer to do that. The ticket you buy is valid for a year to do each thing once which is good if you go on a rainy day.

After spending some time in the caves, we had a walk around the village of Cheddar. We grabbed a cream tea to warm up before heading down to the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Shop. We tried a lot of cheese and paid a couple £’s to go and watch the cheese being made to pass some time. The smoked cheddar was definitely my favourite. After a wander around and trying some cider in another shop we jumped back in the car to dry off and go back to Langford Fivehead for a chilled afternoon.

Back to the hotel for a cosy afternoon
Couldn’t miss the 6 Nations!

We had a table reserved in the restaurant at 7pm that evening, so went downstairs to sit in front of the fire for a little while before dinner. While chilling in front of the fire we got some tasty pre dinner snacks and a bottle of wine. I mean just look at that fire!

The dinner itself was amazing! I had wood pigeon with beetroot to start followed by hake while Tim had beef. Both were delish and save to say we polished off our plates. My pudding was definitely the best – rhubarb and lemon mille feuille – omg it was to die for…

Decided to go for hake – so tasty!
Tim’s beef main
The pudding of dreams… omg it was to die for!
Tim’s chocolate lava cake – still amazing but mine was better :p

The whole weekend was just amazing and the weather didn’t ruin it. Instead it made us slow down and relax.

We’ve said we’ll definitely go back again, maybe when the weather’s better!

Hope you’re all keeping safe!

Until next time,

Cathers xx
