6 Months of Being a Mama

I keep saying it, but I really can’t believe Rory is 6 months… it blows my mind! I’ve been a mum for over 6 months! It’s been a whirlwind but it feels like its gone by in a flash. It really is true what they say… the days are long but the years are short.

The days are getting shorter now we’re coming to the end of September and I was thinking I’m so grateful to have had Rory in March as it meant the days were getting longer and I had the summer out of lockdown to go out and meet people and slowly get myself out of my comfort zone with a newborn.

I’ve spoken about my journey in postpartum here and here or click on ‘motherhood’ to have a look through! I’m so much more comfortable now being a mama, even though I still worry! Rory has been in his own room just over a week and I feel like we all sleep so much better for it. We aren’t disturbing him and he isn’t waking us up with his fidgeting.

I’m also loving weaning so far! We’re doing a mixture of baby led weaning and purees. It’s messy for sure but good fun! The faces he pulls make me smile – the shock of a new texture and/ or taste. So far he hasn’t been a fan of carrot or potato and turns his face up at them but has loved asparagus, cucumber and avocado. We started with 2 weeks of single veg flavours and have branched out into fruits and mixed flavours. I’m going to start making up a few bits from What Mummy Makes book so he can experience more flavours and tastes! We’re also starting different allergens. Egg, dairy and wheat have been fine and next on the list is nut butter! I’m thinking of doing pitta fingers with nut butter on. I’m on the look for more baby food ideas so let me know of any good suggestions or things that your little one has enjoyed!

I always knew that being a mum would turn my world upside down but the love I feel for my little man has blown me away. I’m constantly thinking of him even when I’m not with him and love making him smile and laugh. He has the most lovely smile and loves it when you play with him. It’s great to see him trying to work things out and interacting with people and toys. I can’t wait for him to restart swimming lessons this week and hopefully see him enjoy splashing and playing with the toys. Before the summer break he was starting to hold the toys but would just watch the world go by.

We’re starting to try and get a routine in place. Up until now it’s been fairly relaxed and led by Rory but it’s gotten to the point where we think we’ll try a bit more structure. We aim for a 1.5-2 hr awake window. As soon as I see a yawn or he starts getting cranky I take him off for a nap. I also try to take him out for a walk for his first nap which has been working well.

I love seeing his little personality emerging and I can’t wait to see what the next 6 months holds! I don’t think it’ll be long before he’s crawling as he’s rolling lots now and pushing himself backwards when he’s on his front. You can tell he’s getting annoyed and wants to go forward not back!

I feel like it’s finally time for me to start getting back into fitness properly. I did the FIIT postnatal plan 1 and have started up the 2nd one. I also went for my first swim at the gym by myself post Rory and had the most amazing time. 20 lengths and then some time in the spa! Bliss!

It makes me sad that Rory is no longer a new born and snuggly all the time, but I am loving each month more and more as he shows off his little personality and learns to do new things. Seeing him discover things for the first time is priceless!

Rory truly is the happiest little guy and loves to smile. He lets us know when he wants something and is tired or hungry. Getting him to sleep is getting a little easier but can still be a challenge as he wants to do everything and be involved. He hates missing out! He definitely has a touch of FOMO!

My mat leave is on the final stretch now and I have just over 3 months left before going back. I’ve agreed to go back 3 days a week for Jan and Feb using some of my 2021 accrued holiday, and then go back full time from March. So hopefully that’ll ease me back in nicely! Little man’s nursery is all lined up, so we’ll be ready to go from Jan!

Until next time,
Cathers x
